The Bridgeport Sissies are District 3-4A champions for the first time.

Bridgeport dispatched Decatur 3-0 on Tuesday to claim the title. The Sissies went 6-1-2 in league play. Bridgeport’s last loss came Feb. 16 against Wichita Falls Hirschi.

“It means a ton because our first year it was a big deal that we even made the playoffs,” said junior Bekah Powers. “To be able to get first after beating Decatur this time, it kind of brought back a whole lot of excitement.

“To be a captain of the first-ever Bridgeport Sissies district championship team is pretty awesome.”

After starting the year 2-8-2, the Sissies quickly turned things around. Bridgeport won seven of its last 10 matches to end the season.

“They had the biggest drive and hunger this year to take it,” said Bridgeport coach Lauren Kirby. “Words can’t even describe how excited and happy I was to watch the clock go down and see that 3-0 up there and know all our hard work paid off in the end. [I’m] just really proud of my girls.”

Five of Bridgeport’s district wins were shutouts. The Sissies surrendered just six goals in league play while averaging three goals.

Powers attributed Bridgeport’s success on offense to having a balanced scoring attack.

“That’s the big deal about this year. Before, our offense kind of relied on one or maybe two people,” Powers said. “This year we are able to spread it around. We’ve had defenders score and get assists.”

The Sissies will take on Mineral Wells in the bi-district round of the 4A Region I playoffs at 4 p.m. Friday at Azle.

Mineral Wells finished fourth in District 4-4A but did not win a game in league play, going 0-8.

Mineral Wells beat Bridgeport 2-0 on Feb. 2.

Kirby said Mineral Wells likes to get wide and attack the flanks, something the Sissies will have to counter this time around.

“I believe [it helps that we’ve played them before],” Kirby said. “But again, it was way back when. It’s going to be a very new game.”
