Decatur’s run of familiar playoff opponents will continue Saturday in the 4A Region I regional quarterfinal when the Eagles meet San Elizario.

Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Midland Grande Communications Stadium.

It is the second straight year the two schools have met in the regional quarterfinal. San Elizario beat Decatur 2-0 last year.

“All of them are looking for redemption,” said Decatur coach Chris Benjamin. “They have a chance to go farther in the playoffs than they have ever gone before. They’re really excited about the opportunity and are ready to play.”

San Elizario finished the regular season 16-5, going 6-0 in District 1-4A. San Elizario relies heavily on its stingy defense as they have only given up 18 goals all year. Opponents are averaging just 0.82 goals per game.

Offensively, San Elizario is averaging 3.4 goals.

Benjamin said Decatur must control the pace and capitalize on their scoring chances when they present themselves.

“They’re good with moving the ball around, and we’ve got to disrupt that,” Benjamin said. “We have to look for our types of combinations and then finish off them.”

Decatur enters the contest 16-10-2 and has won seven of its last eight games. Decatur’s only loss in that span was in the regular season finale to Bridgeport. Benjamin’s club is averaging 2.5 goals this year.

With a win, Decatur would advance to the 4A regional tournament. Decatur has never gotten out of the regional quarterfinal.

“Results build confidence,” Benjamin said. “You can work as hard as you want, but when you see results, [you] start to gain confidence and you build off that. You get that little taste, and once you get that taste, you just want to continue working hard.”
