Bridgeport senior Caleb Jennings made school history last weekend, medaling at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association championships in Abilene.

Jennings lifted a total of 1,735 pounds and set personal records in the bench and squat for a fifth-place finish.

“The medal really means a lot,” Jennings said. “It’s not only for me, it’s for the community, too. I felt like I really needed to step up and show my role. Everyone was counting on it. I’m just super ecstatic. I’m glad everyone was behind me and supporting me all the way.”

Jennings heaved 450 pounds on bench press and deadlifted 615 pounds. He squatted 670 pounds. His deadlift was second-best of anyone in his weight class.

Bridgeport coach Charles Wheeler said Jennings’ success is a testament of his work ethic.

“Caleb is irreplaceable,” Wheeler said. “I don’t think in my career I’ll have another Caleb. He’s just a one-of-a-kind guy. He’s second to none in his desire to improve. He came in the mornings and would come after school and do the work we asked him to do. I don’t think there’s a word in the dictionary to describe how much we’re going to miss him.”
