Going into Thursday’s District 7-3A championships, Paradise coach Ken Thompson knew it would take a special effort from his team to qualify for regionals.

With two runners in the top 10 and an average time of 19:09, Thompson got just that.

The Panthers finished third with 76 points and qualified for the Region I meet in Lubbock Oct. 22.

“It means a lot. These kids put in so much time,” Thompson said. “I’m very proud of them. A little nervous, but it was that way going in. We knew it was going to be close between us, Peaster and Jacksboro.”

Peaster finished second overall, edging Paradise by 14 points. The Panthers held off fourth-place Jacksboro by 13 points. The Tigers tallied 89 points.

Kobe Wakefield was Paradise’s top runner, finishing sixth with an 18:11.60. Matthew Eisen clocked an 18:14.49 for seventh.
