Last season Northwest had a disappointing showing at the District 6-5A meet. Neither the boys or girls qualified for regionals as a team, and only three individuals advanced.

This year the Texans flipped the script on the competition.

Northwest turned in a dominant effort at the District 8-5A meet, claiming gold with 38 points. Joseph Thomas won the 5K in 16:25.43. Carson Hughes was second, posting a 16:33.71.

The Lady Texans also finished on the podium at district, taking silver with 49 points. They were led by Paige O’Connor, who ran a 20:05.67 for fourth.

Now both the boys and girls will get the chance to qualify for state Monday at the Region I championships at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

“They’re excited at even having the opportunity to do this,” said Northwest coach Jerry Carter. “Last year they didn’t get either team out of the district competition. This is a big deal to these kids. They’re taking full advantage of it. Kudos to them. These are things people didn’t think they could do.”

The 5A girls race will begin at 2 p.m. The 5A boys race will immediately follow at 2:30 p.m.
