With several players making their varsity debut last year, the Northwest Lady Texans experienced their ups and downs throughout the season.

After a year of experience and returning 10 players, the Lady Texans hope to get back in the postseason.

“It’s a very different situation from last year. We had a lot of freshmen and sophomores last year that were unsure in their roles and were in their first year of playing varsity,” said Northwest coach Jennifer Chandler. “Those kids are now confident in their decision-making. It’s nice to go into the year where the kids know what to do and trust in one another.”

The Lady Texans return second-team all-district hitters Kori James and Bailey Tompkins to lead a versatile offense. James finished with 373 kills. Tompkins added 289.

“I’m real excited for my senior season. We will be better at the net. We’ve gotten smarter in our hitting,” James said.

The offense will have a new person at the controls after record-setting setter Annalise Lucio graduated. Morgan Andres, a three-year varsity player, and Rylie Anderson, a utility player converting to setter, will run the offense. Chandler said the two setters spent time in the offseason working with Lucio.

“Annalise was willing to mentor them,” Chandler said. “The two setters were appreciative for that relationship and were able to learn from her.

“Both worked hard in the offseason and were able to build relationships with the hitters.”

The Lady Texans will be in a new league this year, moving north to play in 8-5A with Denton, Ryan, Braswell, Lake Dallas, The Colony and Little Elm.
