A few weeks ago at the Reunion Run, Jentry Lamirand was home sick with a stomach bug.

The Decatur freshman missed out on the chance to run the course where the District 8-4A title would be decided and was unsure when she would be back.

“I didn’t think I would bounce back as quickly as I did,” Lamirand said. “Coach Park really pushed me. I got back faster than I thought it would.”

Tuesday at the 8-4A championships, Lamirand did not appear to miss a beat.

Battling with teammate Hanul Lewis for most of the race, Lamirand ran away with the varsity girls title, clocking a 12:03 to secure the gold.

“I was just hoping Hanul was pushing and keeping up,” Lamirand said. “I think I might have actually started out a little too fast. I was honestly surprised a little bit.”

Along with Lamirand claiming the individual crown, the Lady Eagles also repeated as district champions.

Decatur finished with 26 points and had six runners in the top 10. Lewis was fourth with a 12:16.2. Grace Lowery took fifth, clocking a 12:27.2. Makenzie Fox, Kayla Leal and Genoveva Pancheco rounded out the top 10.

“I’m so glad we had six in the top 10,” Lamirand said. “We have pushed each other really hard the past couple of months and I think it really paid off.”
