Kris Handlon got an early Father’s Day present last Friday.

On his first swing of the day, Handlon found the bottom of the cup at the Decatur Chamber of Commerce Father’s Day Tournament. With a 9 iron on the 135-yard No. 7, Handlon tallied an ace.

“If you’re going to hit a hole in one at Decatur, that’s the hole you’re going to hit it on,” Handlon said. “It was very lucky. It was pretty exciting right off the bat.”

The moment was especially memorable for Handlon because he and his wife are expecting their first child in the fall. His wife, Tiffany, is a teacher at Rann Elementary in Decatur.

His son is due Sept. 2.

“I’ve got my first one on the way. It was somewhat of my first Father’s Day,” Handlon said. “Everybody was [going crazy]. I got a high five from everybody twice.”

The night before the tournament, Handlon went out to the course to help set up. He said he got in a few practice shots Thursday and was feeling confident.

“[Friday] when I got up there I told them, ‘Guys, I’ve got this club in my bag,'” Handlon said. “It kind of curved around the trees and hit on the green and started rolling towards the hole looking like it might go in. And it dang sure did. I think everybody on the course heard us.”

Handlon graduated from Decatur in 2007. He attended Texas Tech University and majored in business marketing, graduating in 2011.

Handlon now works at Texas Farm Bureau Insurance.

This year, Handlon competed in the tournament with several of his friends. They finished the round 14-under par, narrowly missing out on the title. But Handlon was not too disappointed.

“We were hollering,” Handlon said. “Even on the back side they said they could hear us. They didn’t know if we were messing with them or not.”
