The Slidell Greyhounds can complete a decade of dominance in their cross country district this season.

By capturing the 22-A title in October, the Greyhounds would claim the program’s 10th straight league crown.

But a district title is not the Greyhounds’ lone goal. Slidell would like to get back to Round Rock and the state meet.

Slidell coach Casey Pierce believes this team may have a shot in a new-look Region III.

“As a team, I think we’re in the top five or six,” Pierce said. “Saltillo and Miller Grove graduated everybody, which makes the region look a lot different. In the past, it’s been Saltillo and Miller Grove with everyone hoping to get third.”

The Greyhounds return senior Hunter Horner, who will be looking for his third state trip. Horner finished 37th last year at state, running 18:02.

Slidell returns Ben McCasland, Brady Vanover, Easton Vanover, Carlos Gonzalez and Gerald McCasland from last year’s squad. Pierce said there are a couple of other runners that could push for varsity spots.

On the girls side, Slidell returned to regionals last year despite struggling with injuries and numbers most of the season.

“They should be better this year. They were third in district last year and have a shot to win it this year,” Pierce said.

Maddie and Bailey Meyer return along with Kristal Gladden. The team will get a boost with Aurora DeLuna transferring back to the school.
