Five seniors put Bridgeport cross country on the map last year, earning fifth place in 4A at the state meet.

After graduating a large share of the team, a boys team full of fresh faces are looking to carry the mantle forward as they log miles in the blazing heat ahead of the 2018 cross country season.

“Our guys did a great job representing Bridgeport last year,” said Bridgeport coach Dallas Taylor. “Now, we’d like to continue on that path.”

Taylor said her job has been filling in the gaps and finding talent to add to the roster. Taylor said the fruits of last year’s success will matriculate into this year’s squad.

“I think the bar has been raised,” she said. “Those boys, their heart and soul was Bridgeport cross country running. When you get so see that as a sophomore or a freshman, I think it makes you hungry to be that passionate too.”

On the girls side, the Sissies cross country team brings back it’s entire varsity team.

Sophomore Marisol Fraga returns with more state title aspirations after her breakout campaign last year.

As a freshman, Fraga finished 14th in the Class 4A Region II race at Lynn Creek Park. Fraga finished the 3,200-meter course in 12:16.

“We’re looking forward to a very strong girl’s season,” Taylor said. “We have Marisol and some strong senior runners coming back. The future is bright.”
