Decatur earned a berth at the Texas State 7-on-7 championships with a 46-20 victory over Lone Oak Saturday.

The Division II tournament starts Thursday and Friday at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station

“They competed really well,” said Decatur coach Mike Fuller. “We played good defense and knocked balls down. We really threw it and caught the ball well.”

The Eagles went 3-1 in pool play, knocking off Kemp 42-21 and Anna 32-19 at the Division II qualifier in Celina. Texarkana Pleasant Grove was the lone team to beat Decatur. They, along with Bonham, were the other two state qualifiers.

Decatur is the second Wise County team to qualify for the state tournament. Bridgeport earned a spot a few weeks ago with a victory over Levelland.

The Eagles are coming off an 8-5 season in 2017, advancing to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2013.

“The kids go to these tournaments wanting to qualify, and they love it,” Fuller said. “I think it’s great the kids are together and they’re thinking about their coverages and plays. They get to compete and are thinking about our schemes and working on their skills.”
