Ty Read’s two interceptions against Levelland helped the Bridgeport Bulls secure a victory Saturday and a trip to the Texas State 7 on 7 championships.

The state tournament is June 28-29 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.

“They competed well, and I’m proud they get a chance to go down there,” said Bridgeport coach Shannon Wilson. “Last year, we barely missed it.”

The Bulls went 3-1 in pool play and then knocked off Levelland to secure the state berth at the Division II qualifier at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. Mineral Wells, who beat Bridgeport in pool play, earned the other state berth.

Quarterback Jadon Maddux had a strong tournament. The junior will be in his second season as the Bulls’ starting quarterback.

“He did well. We had a lot of people have a good tournament,” Wilson said.

Wilson was pleased with the defensive effort.

“The guys know what we are doing. We use 7 on 7 as a chance to get better,” Wilson said.

Bridgeport is the lone Wise County team to qualify for state. More state qualifiers are scheduled this weekend and June 22-23.
