A big hit from Dillon Inman forced the fumble recovered by teammate Bartolo Guevara to set up a game-tying touchdown for the Boyd Yellowjackets early in the third quarter Thursday night.
It was the only luck the Yellowjackets had in slowing down the Eastland Mavericks’ balanced attack in the second half. Eastland scored on its next four possessions after Boyd tied the game at 21 to run away from the Yellowjackets in a 49-27 victory at Graham’s Newton Field in the 3A Division I Region I bi-district game.

Eastland piled up 503 yards with quarterback Behren Morton throwing for 302 and four touchdowns. The Mavericks’ big, bruising running back Brandon Fielding added 187 yards and two scores.
“They have a lot of weapons. They throw it well and run it well,” said Boyd coach Brandon Hopkins. “That quarterback is going to be able to play somewhere down the line. He can spin it well. They just have a lot of weapons. We fought hard until the end.”
The loss ended the Yellowjackets’ season at 6-5. After going 0-10 in 2016, Boyd made the playoffs for a second straight year.
Hopkins praised his eight seniors, who helped put the program back on solid footing.
“I’m very proud of these kids for how far we got,” Hopkins said. “We had good senior leadership. We had good juniors and a ton of sophomores playing. I feel sorry for these seniors, but there’s a lot more good football coming.”
Boyd quarterback Kody Risenhoover was one of the seniors closing out his career. He threw for 306 yards, completing 33 of his 44 attempts with three touchdowns and two interceptions in his final game.
After hitting Caleb Armijo in the back of the end zone in the closing seconds of the first half, Risenhoover took advantage of the turnover to start the third quarter with a fourth-down touchdown toss to Koby Miller to tie the game at 21.
Risenhoover lost one of his biggest weapons in Boyd’s leading receiver Brian Couture just three plays into the game. Couture was injured at the end of a 43-yard reception from Risenhoover.
“They were going to have a hard time covering him and we lose him on the first series,” Hopkins said. “That’s a big loss for us offensively and defensively.”
Boyd’s first series stalled out at the Eastland 6-yard line with a turnover on downs. Eastland needed just one play to get out of the shadow of its own end zone. Morton hit Alex Gonzales with a short pass. Gonzales did the rest racing 94 yards down the sideline for the quick Eastland lead.
Gonzales hauled in eight catches for 197 yards and two scores. He added a rushing touchdown.
Morton added at 35-yard strike to Tyler Lucky after Fielding’s first touchdown to put Eastland up 21-7 in the first half.
Eastland scored on seven of its 11 possessions.
“They played consistently and run their plays well,” said Boyd sophomore running back Nick Taylor. “We had some trouble lining up defensively. They are a really good team.”
