The Chico Dragons got off on the right foot in a big way against Petrolia Friday, winning the first contest of the Clay Sanders era 56-29 on the road.

After going into halftime leading 20-13, Chico put up 30 points in the third quarter, mainly on the legs of Chico running back Nico Starnes.

Stats weren’t available as of press time, but Chico coach Clayton Sanders said his running back had about 300 yards. Chico added six points in the fourth to seal the 56-29 win.

Sanders said he was proud of the Dragons following his head coaching debut.

“I’m fired up about getting that opening win,” Sanders said. “There are plenty of things that we need to clean up and fix, but overall it was a great team win. The great fans of Chico showed up and the kids showed up to play. I’m not satisfied, but I am proud.”
