Decatur’s Dayne Chapman rebounded from a tough front nine Monday at the UIL state tournament at Apple Rock to finish ninth in 4A.

The sophomore was 8 over after nine holes but managed to finish the round with a 79. He went on to card a 77 Tuesday for a two-day total of 156.

“I’m very proud to represent my school like that,” Chapman said “I’ll hopefully make it back to state again and do even better. I feel like this will help me a lot in the future.”

Chapman finished 14 shots off the lead. He tripled bogied the seventh hole on Monday and Tuesday.

“The rough start — I dug myself into too deep of a hole to post a good number on the first day,” Chapman said. “I was just putting really bad. That’s what got me. I was able to kind of turn it around towards the end of the round and get back to a decent first day.”

Madisonville’s Sam Bennett won the state title with a 142. He finished 2 under par Monday. Monahans’ Joey Kirk took home the silver medal, firing a 146. Brownwood’s Jeryn Pruett finished third with a 147.

Chapman said although the course was challenging, he had several opportunities to make birdie.

“It was probably the nicest golf course I’ve ever been to,” Chapman said. “It was kind of tough, but there were some holes you could score on.”

“I wouldn’t be the golfer I am without my grandpa,” Dayne said. “He’s made me such a great golfer by teaching me everything he knows about the game.”
