On the heels of a lopsided loss to Victory Christian Academy over the weekend, the Bridgeport Sissies entered Tuesday night’s match with 3A powerhouse Peaster needing a confidence boost.

But through the first two sets, it looked as though the Sissies would have to continue searching.

Bridgeport bungled two early leads and fell into a two-set hole to start the game. Then, with their backs against the wall and the match on the line, it all came together.

The Sissies rallied and claimed the next three sets, stunning the Lady Greyhounds (23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-13) in a massive come-from-behind victory.

Bridgeport coach Allison Jones said everything she’s been preaching came to fruition Tuesday night.

“This is what I’ve been looking for them to get out of themselves since we started,” Jones said. “I just told them to keep pushing, keeping pushing and fight. They just wanted it. They just wanted it more.”

Peaster (12-8) was the Class 3A Region I champion in 2016 and went to the region quarterfinals last season, losing to Boyd.  Scoring a win over an opponent like Peaster could not have come at a better time, Jones added.

“We’ve played well, but just haven’t come out on top,” she said. “We needed this.”

Bridgeport claimed early leads in the first two sets only to see them slip away. In the third set, the Sissies flipped a switch behind strong play at the net from Anna Strother, Tiffany Wootton and Morgan Davidson.

Davidson said their mindset was key in the comeback.

“Even though we were down, we stayed positive the whole way through,” Davidson said. “This is a good boost of confidence for us. It helps us believe.”

Wootton led the team in kills with 15, while Strother racked up 12 kills and six blocks. Davidson had six kills and five blocks in the win.

After claiming the third set, Bridgeport found another gear and looked like a completely different team, standing toe-to-toe with the Lady Greyhounds and out-classing them to close out the five-set win.

Jones said her setters, consisting of Sydney Delgado, Jolene Torres and Haley Barton, came up big in the win.

Barton led the team in assists with 74 and Delgado finished with 67. Bridgeport libero Kristen Grooms finished with 46 digs to lead the Sissies.

“I think all of us came in with this mindset that we could win,” Strother said. “We all kept believing and took it one point at a time.”
