It started with an empty possession. And then another.

And another.

With each missed shot and turnover, the Jacksboro Tigers cashed in at the other end, turning Boyd miscues into points. During one of the Yellowjackets’ timeouts, Boyd coach Jacob Hines told his team to relax. But instead, they kept pressing.

Managing just six points in the third quarter, the Yellowjackets eventually fell to Jacksboro 55-40 on Tuesday night.

“I think we just struggled to make shots,” Hines said. “We were trying to get it all back at once. The deficit got to about seven or eight points. We’d come down and kind of get out of the flow of our offense.”

Boyd was outscored 34-17 in the second half, as the Tigers erased a 26-21 halftime deficit.  Fueled by a 10-0 run in the third quarter, Jacksboro slowly started gaining separation.

Along with Boyd going cold from the field, the Yellowjackets also had several lapses on defense in the second half. Multiple times weak side help and rotations would be late, leading to easy baskets for the Tigers.

“[Our offense] had an effect on our defense,” Hines said. “We had a couple of plays where we fell asleep.”

Reuben Rodebaugh and Blake Rodgers led the Yellowjackets in scoring with 12 points each. Connor Richardson was held to just four points in the loss.

Jacksboro’s Payton Laake led all scorers with 22 points.

The loss drops Boyd to 13-6 on the season and 1-2 in District 8-3A play. The Yellowjackets travel to Holliday Friday night.
