Last year in the Class 3A semifinal, the Boyd Lady Jackets dropped the first two sets to Goliad, falling into a quick 2-0 hole.

The deficit proved to be too much, as Boyd fell in the decisive fifth set to go home one win short of playing for a state championship. Ever since, the loss has been the only thing on the minds of the Lady Jackets.

“We had a state appearance last year and it didn’t come out in our favor,” said senior Macee Valtr. “We weren’t here to mess around. We’re here on a business trip. We were prepared and ready to attack from the get-go.”

Valtr wasn’t kidding.

Unlike last year’s semifinal match, Boyd came out firing from the outset, immediately taking control of the match en route to a 25-10, 25-7, 25-15 sweep of Vanderbilt Industrial.

The win catapulted the Lady Jackets into their first state final match. Boyd will play the winner of Callisburg in the 3A championship at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Three Lady Jackets ended the match double-digit kills, led by Delaney Pellegrini with 16. Senior all-state outside hitter Jordyn Todd added 14 and Valtr buried 12.

Eight of Todd’s kills came in the first frame, as Boyd rattled off nine straight points to end the first set.

“They are a very smart team,” said Industrial coach Jenna Buzek. “You think you know where they’re going and they go somewhere else. That’s hard to block and that’s hard to defend.”

Boyd’s dynamic and unrelenting offensive attack gave the Lady Cobras problems from the start.

The Lady Jackets made just nine errors and hit .351 as a team. Setter Tori Pellegrini dished out 37 assists to six different players. Her and Delaney Pellegrini were the catalyst behind a 16-4 run to begin the second set.

“On this stage it’s probably rare, but for these girls it isn’t,” said Boyd coach Dusty Crafton of her team’s performance. “They’re really talented young ladies. But it’s not just the talent. It’s the work ethic. They have put in the work and totally deserve it.”

In the third set, Delaney Pellegrini landed her 15th kill to force Industrial to burn its final timeout down 19-13. A few moments later, Valtr put the finishing touches on a dominant performance to lift the Lady Jackets into the 3A final.

Boyd still has one game left to reach its ultimate goal, but for Todd and the rest of the Lady Jackets, Thursday’s win was long-awaited redemption.

“[This win] means everything,” Todd said. “We were all just so pumped for this game in the beginning. We were ready for this, for sure.”
