Wise County girls basketball Co-MVP and state track qualifier Maddie Mitschke tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in a summer league basketball game last week.

Mitschke, who will be a senior in the fall, led the Lady Panthers to a fourth-place league finish and playoff appearance while averaging a double-double of 12.9 points and 10.1 rebounds. She qualified for the state track meet in the 300 hurdles and won 8-3A and area titles in the event.

“It’s a big blow,” said Paradise girls basketball coach Chad Woodard. “Anytime you lose a leader of your program it’s tough. But she’s a resilient kid. She’s going to fight to get back.”

Woodard said he is not sure if Mitschke will see court time in the upcoming season. He said Mitschke met with her doctors on Friday to learn more and determine a treatment plan.

“Her strong faith is going to get her through this,” Woodard said. “This is something you put in God’s hands.”

Mitchke’s teammate, Christina Tipton, also tore her ACL in the same game. Tipton was a key role player for the Lady Panthers last season on the court and a first-team catcher from 8-3A.

She hit clean-up for Paradise and batted .340, driving in 19 runs. Tipton said she is expected to miss anywhere from six to eight months recovering.

“I was in the training room looking at Maddie and Christina was driving to the basket and stepped on someone’s foot,” Woodard said. “She kind of blew her knee out.”
