Basketball: Slidell’s Shelton earns MVP – Pierce named Coach of the Year

Slidell’s Layton Shelton was named District 21-A MVP for the second time and helping the Greyhounds return to the Class A Region III quarterfinals.

Shelton averaged 14 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Slidell coach Casey Pierce earned Coach of the Year honors in his first season at the helm, leading the Greyhounds to a 27-6 finish. Slidell went undefeated in district play, earning a first-round playoff bye. The Greyhounds throttled Roxton in the area round before falling to Irving Universal in the regional quarterfinal.

Slayton Pruett and Shelby Johnson were named to the first team. A 6-foot, 6-inch sophomore, Pruett averaged 11.9 points and 8.9 rebounds. Johnson averaged 8.7 points in his senior campaign.

Jessee Tijerina and Junter Horner earned second-team honors. Horner averaged 8.9 points and was an all-tournament selection at the Slidell Invitational.
