For the second straight year, the Northwest Texans will take on Sherman in the 5A Region I bi-district round of the playoffs.

Northwest beat Sherman 78-68 last season, and the two will square off again at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Lake Dallas.

“I think now that we’ve played them once we’ll be a little more familiar with them,” said Northwest coach Mike Hatch. “Last year our kids didn’t even know who they were. I don’t think they gave them the proper respect they deserved, and therefore we ended up struggling a little bit. I think this year we’ll go into that game knowing they’re pretty good.

“We’re going to have to perform at a high level or we’ll be in trouble.”

Sherman finished the regular season 17-15 overall and 6-6 in district. The Bearcats are the fourth seed from District 5-5A.

Hatch said a key to the game will be defending the 3-point line, as Sherman loves to hoist shots from beyond the arc.

“They’re extremely athletic, and they shoot the ball from deep,” Hatch said. “They’re long-range shooters. They have no conscience, so it’s not going to bother them to miss three or four in a row. We’re going to have to be able to guard the 3 and stay in front of them.”

The Texans are led by junior guard Avery Anderson, who averages over 17 points and five assists per game. Mason Hix is Northwest’s second-leading scorer, averaging over 12 points a night.

Northwest capped off the regular season with a 46-44 overtime victory over Brewer. The Texans went 14-0 in District 6-5A, claiming their second consecutive district title.

“I thought our kids handled it pretty good,” said Hatch of the win against Brewer. “It was a great game going into the playoffs.”
