Basketball: Hicks, Southard earn first team

Decatur’s Wilson Hicks and Ethan Southard were both named to the District 9-4A first-team.

Hicks led the Eagles in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per game. He also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.

Southard emerged as a key interior presence late in the season, serving as Decatur’s rim protector and shot blocker. He averaged five rebounds per night.

The Eagles lost in the bi-district round of the playoffs to Dallas Carter, who will play in the state tournament this weekend.

Bridgeport’s Andrew Horton earned a first-team spot. Horton was the Bulls’ leading scorer, averaging 20.4 points. Horton shot 43 percent from the field and 37 percent from beyond the arc.
