The Chico Dragons will face a tall task when they take on District 12-2A champion Sam Rayburn in the bi-district round of the playoffs.

The two schools will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Valley View.

Chico ended the year 5-5 in District 11-2A, claiming the fourth and final playoff spot. Sam Rayburn, meanwhile, cruised to a district crown.

“They’re very skilled,” said Chico coach Mark Kyle. “They shoot the ball well and handle the ball well. This is a group of kids that’s been in the playoffs for the third straight year. We’re going to have to do a good job of neutralizing penetration, closing out shooters and rebounding well.”

Kyle said he expects Sam Rayburn to throw a slew of defenses at them, ranging from pressure man to zone. With three seniors in his backcourt, Kyle is confident in the Dragons’ ability to handle different looks.

“It helps that I’ve got three senior guards out there that have a lot of experience and pick up on things like that and make good adjustments,” Kyle said.

Chico enters the playoffs having won two of its last three games. The Dragons upset second-place Poolville last week, something Kyle believes will give Chico momentum and confidence entering this game as an underdog.

“You don’t know the outcome until you play the game,” Kyle said. “Nobody wins on paper. You’ve got to play the game. You can’t count wins and losses until you get done playing.”
