The Eaton Eagles won the 5A state title Saturday, beating Forney 4-1.

Eaton became the first school in Northwest ISD history to win a baseball state championship.

Senior Riley Taylor held Forney to a run on three hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked three in the title game. He was named state tournament MVP.

Zach Wilson and Sean Klein singled in runs, and Klein scored on a balk in the top of the fifth to put Eaton up 3-1. Eaton added an insurance run in the sixth on Brock Webber’s single.

The Eagles won the semifinal in dramatic fashion, knocking off Kingwood Park 3-2 in extra innings to earn a berth in the title game. Newark resident Colbie Fritchen delivered the walk-off hit in the eighth inning, sneaking a 2-1 pitch just past the outstretched arms of Kingwood Park’s third baseman.

Eaton finished the year 34-9-1 in just its second season playing at the varsity level.

Webber, Klein, Colby Seltzer and Jack Angus earned spots on the all-state tournament team.
