After getting a few days off for Christmas, Wise County basketball teams will be back in action starting Thursday at various holiday tournaments around the area.

Decatur, the No. 14 team in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 4A poll, will compete in the prestigious Whataburger Tournament. The Eagles will be in the blue division and face Liberty Hill at noon Thursday at Chisholm Trail High School.

“This little stretch right here will be a good measuring stick before we head into district play,” said Decatur coach Drew Coffman. “I think for us it’s kind of a personal deal now. We went 0-4 over there last year. I’m speaking for myself, but we went 0-4 and I think we have a chip on our shoulder and have something to prove over there.”

Decatur enters the Whataburger Tournament 16-2. The Eagles knocked off the top-ranked team in Class 3A, Brock, last Friday and have won four straight.

“We have a chip on our shoulder going forward,” said Decatur senior Wilson Hicks. “We know we went 0-4 last year and the goal is to go win it.”

Elsewhere, the Lady Eagles, Boyd Yellowjackets and Lady Jackets will travel to Gainesville Thursday for the NCTC Tournament.

The Paradise Panthers, Alvord Bulldogs, Slidell Hounds and Lady Hounds will square off in the Windthorst Tournament.

The Paradise Lady Panthers will head north for the Burkburnett Tournament. The Chico Dragons and Lady Dragons will be in the Munday Tournament.
