Each of their coaches praised their hard work and dedication before the signing ceremony.

“I’m way excited,” Birmingham said. “New Mexico has always felt like home to me. It’s a great place for me to go and play baseball.”

Chism helped lead the Lady Eagles to the 4A Region II final last year. She was the District 9-4A MVP, striking out 259 batters to propel Decatur to an undefeated league title. Chism was also the Wise County MVP, sporting a 1.57 ERA in 30 games.

Kostelecky eclipsed the 1,000-kill mark last weekend against Glen Rose in the 4A Region I final. She will play in her first state tournament Friday when the Lady Eagles battle Melissa in the 4A semifinal.

She plans to major in kinesiology, and said she chose Rice because of its combination of athletics and academics.

“I’m very excited to compete in that competitive atmosphere and with those girls,” Kostelecky said. “They’re all amazing and the coaching staff is amazing. I can’t wait.

“I knew that there I would be able to excel academically and athletically. That’s the best place for me to do that.”
