Remembering Zelda

My heart aches today after reading in Update that my good friend and fellow book lover, Zelda Colburn had died. Ms. Colburn and I sat through many Bridgeport School Board meetings together, always shared a laugh (or two) and talked about the latest book we were reading.

Colburn was the superintendent’s administrative assistant and as such had access to information that a reporter was usually refused. Try as I might, Zelda never shared any of the confidential info with me. But that did not stop us from being great friends.

She had a heart of gold and lived her life helping the students, parents and staff. After I left Wise County, Zelda and I continued to correspond through Facebook and other means. It meant a lot to me that she would take the time to stay in touch.

In closing, I hope Bridgeport School will find an appropriate way to honor this fine lady. I’ll miss you, Zelda. You were the best.
