Participants can choose between an 8, 25, 50, or 100-mile ride. Registration is 6 a.m., and the ride begins at 7. All riders receive a T-shirt, meal and medal. (Winning!)

#2 MIDDLE SCHOOL SWIM

Bridgeport Parks and Recreation planned one last summer hurrah for middle school students at the city pool. Sixth, seventh and eighth graders are invited 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

You can buy tickets in advance for $3 at the pool or city hall. Tickets the day of the event are $5

#3 TAX FREE WEEKEND

Back-to-school means a shopping trip or two to gather school supplies, clothes and shoes for everyone in the family. To ease the financial burden, consider shopping during Texas’ sales tax holiday weekend.

This year it’s Aug. 10-12, and you can buy most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks tax free. You’ll save about $8 for every $100 you spend, but hey, that eight bucks will cover about three cafeteria lunches.
