Vandals have apparently struck a park near downtown Chico once again.

Around 7:40 p.m. Friday, a visitor to Robinson Park, located at the corner of West Sherman and Buffalo streets a block from the downtown square, noticed the play set slide was on fire, according to Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin.

The Chico Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a “yellow slide” on fire, and the fire was quickly put out.

“A small hole was burned into the bottom of the slide before the fire was extinguished,” Akin said.

No suspects have been named, he added.

Since April of 2016, the sheriff’s office has responded to six criminal mischief complaints at the park.

Last month, the Chico City Council voted to change its curfew from midnight to 10 p.m. every night for anyone under 17 years old, with certain exceptions.

Chico Mayor Colleen Self said recent vandalism at the park as well as two burglaries at the nearby Chico Public Library since late October were the reasons for changing the curfew.

Anyone with information about the fire should call the Wise County Sheriff’s Office at 940-627-5971.
