The Northwest Texans beat Alamo Heights in the 5A state semifinal Thursday night, and they did it with a sea of red behind them.

District administrators excused all students who purchased a ticket to the state tournament from class at noon Thursday to travel to San Antonio. Students were also excused from class all day Friday so they could attend the state final at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Northwest Principal Jason Childress said, while attendance is important to administrators, giving students the chance to potentially witness a state title was something the school district could not pass up.

“When a team makes it to the state tournament, it can do so much for the culture of the school,” Childress said. “We may take a little dip [in attendance], but in the end, we’ll benefit from kids experiencing that and talking about it. It’s just a really positive thing for the school.”

Childress said he expects more than 100 students to actually attend the games at the Alamodome. While transportation was not provided, many students carpooled with one another to make the trip.

Morgan Owens and Logan Morrow both live in Wise County and are seniors at Northwest. Owens lives in Aurora and Morrow lives in Rhome. They were at the semifinal game Thursday night.

“We take huge pride in calling our student section one of the best around,” Morrow said. “A lot of the guys [on the team] are really close, and you can definitely see that on the court when they’re playing together. The fact that they all want to push themselves to be the best that they can be, it makes it so easy for us to go out and have a great time watching them.”

Northwest is more than four hours from San Antonio and almost 300 miles away. Owens said she has enjoyed watching the Texans this season and hopes she is able to see them cap the season with a championship on Saturday.

“It’s definitely a lot of fun,” Owens said. “It’s one of those things where a small town, even though it’s a huge school, goes down and enjoys [our] basketball team.”
