Russell indicted for arson

Two Wise County men were indicted on separate arson-related charges by a Wise County grand jury Dec. 18.

Robert Charles Russell, 55, of Alvord was indicted for the state jail felony charge of arson of a building/habitation/vehicle reckless causes damage stemming from a fire at the Barclay Salvage yard Aug. 3. He was arrested Oct. 4 following an investigation by the Wise County Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighters from more than 20 fire departments battled the intense blaze, and two firefighters were injured – a Chico firefighter sustained a broken leg and a Greenwood/Slidell firefighter suffered heat exhaustion at the August fire. Both had to be transported to Wise Health System in Decatur.

The fire burned approximately 450 acres near County Road 2391 between Alvord and Decatur, and it caused extensive damage at the salvage yard, where hundreds of vehicles were destroyed.

At the time of the fire, Wise County was under a burn ban that prohibited all outdoor burning.

Jeffery Shayne Bridges, 27, of Bridgeport was indicted on a first degree felony charge of injury to a child/elderly/disabled with intent to cause serious bodily injury/mental and a second degree felony charge of arson.

Wise County Sheriff’s officers responded to a domestic disturbance call on Private Road 1533 near Bridgeport Oct. 22. According to the indictment, Bridges assaulted his grandmother and set a bedroom door on fire.

Bridges ran from the home but was located by deputies and arrested.
