Any runners eager to enter a race for a good cause will have a chance to do so April 14 at the Decatur 5K, now known as Jackie’s Run.

For years proceeds from the Decatur 5K have gone to support the Jackie Murphree Scholarship for local seniors planning to go into medical fields.

Jackie, who was in a horrific car accident in 2007 that left her unable to walk or talk, was often pushed in races by her father Patrick, other friends and her team of Fit-N-Wise therapists. Jackie died in January.

Fit-N-Wise will host the inaugural Fit-N-Wise Run Fest April 14, where the Decatur 5K will become Jackie’s Run in memoriam.

“It will be a memorial run now,” said Holly Berry Director of Child Wellness and School Based Telemedicine. “We changed the name to Jackie’s Run. We wanted something memorable, so people would start hearing about it and always remember it’s Jackie’s Run.”

There will also be a 1-mile fun run for students in the Fit Y.O.U.T.H. program. Both races will start and end at Decatur’s McCarroll Middle School track.

“It’s the first year when the route will actually be blockaded,” Berry said. “With all the kids running, it had to be blocked off.”

The race previously started and ended on the Decatur square.

A portion of proceeds from the races will benefit the Jackie Murphree Scholarship, and participants in the fun run can donate part of their entry fee to local elementary schools. Entry to the 1-mile fun run is $20, and the Jackie’s Run 5K is $30. The fun run starts at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K starts at 9 a.m.

There will also be a raffle for grass-fed beef and a freezer. Registration for the raffle the front desk of Fit-N-Wise or Texas Farm Bureau Insurance in Decatur. You can register for the race online at

Packet pickup will be at Fit-N-Wise on April 12 and 13. On April 14, packet pickup will be at McCarroll Middle School track starting at 7 a.m.

“We’re hoping to build on the run every year,” Berry said. “It’s our county’s race.”
