Rhome city hall offices were moved from the 1st Street building in May 2016 due to mold and asbestos. The building is now free of mold and has a new roof, but the city has decided they can’t afford to finish the remodel.

Previous cost estimates for the renovation ranged from $250,000 to $300,000. Mayor Michelle di Credico told the council Thursday the city engineer estimates it would cost $270,000 to remodel the office side and $190,000 for the council chambers.

“That’s significantly higher than we thought,” di Credico said.

The council was in agreement that they didn’t want to spend any more on the old city hall.

“I say we cut our losses and run,” Councilman Kenny Crenshaw said. “To get out of a hole you stop digging.”

di Credico asked if the council would rather update the Community Center, where they currently hold council meetings. They said yes. di Credico said she’d ask the engineer to estimate the cost and bring back a plan at the next meeting.
