FILLING A NEED – Boyd junior Aliza White started the Needs Locker in the library at Boyd High School to provide school supplies and personal hygiene products for students who need them. Messenger photo by Richard Greene

When Aliza White heard about a pantry at nearby Keller Timber Creek that allowed students to anonymously drop by to pick up school supplies, she thought it would be something that could be helpful on her own campus.

The Boyd junior recently started the school’s Needs Locker, which she will be stocking with school supplies and personal hygiene products.

“There’s a lot of students that don’t have access to all they need for personal hygiene or school supplies,” White said. “I’m starting the Needs Locker as an anonymous place where students can come and go and get what they need.”

The idea was quickly supported by the school’s administration. Boyd High School Principal Susan Foster is not surprised to see White leading the effort.

“Aliza is a very compassionate person,” Foster said. “This pantry will make a big difference to a lot of the kids on our campus.”

The Needs Locker is located in a closet in the library. White said the location should allow students privacy and allow for access throughout the day.

“If a student needs something, they can come by and get what they need and leave items for others,” White said. “It’s based on the honor system.”

White is in the process of stocking the room. She’s collected a few hundred dollars to get the project started.

“I hope to continue to get donations,” she said. “All the money is for stocking. I do need a couple more crates to stock and restock.

“I’m hoping it goes well. It’s good to have something available to the students that need it.”

It would be nice if the article included how to make donations.

    How do you make donations?

    Thanks.
