Two educators at Alvord High School have switched roles.

Former AHS Principal Michael Thurman is now a teacher and coach at the high school and middle school, while coach Aaron Tefertiller is now principal at AHS.

The change was announced on the district’s Facebook page Friday, saying that it would be a day of transition. The two men began their new roles on Monday, with Thurman taking over teaching Tefertiller’s social studies classes.

Superintendent Randy Brown said the change had been in the works for a couple of weeks and was initiated by Thurman.

“Mr. Thurman came to me and let me know he was ready for something different,” Brown said. “Earlier in his career he had been a teacher and a coach and was ready for a change.”

Brown said he immediately thought of Tefertiller, the boys basketball coach and teacher, who has previously been a principal in the Gold-Burg and Bellevue school districts. Tefertiller will continue to serve as boys basketball coach while he is principal.

“He’s done a great job with the boys basketball program. We’re beginning to see the fruits of his labor. And we’re a small enough school district that it’s feasible (to serve in both roles),” Brown said.

In the Facebook post, Thurman talked about his decision.

“After a great deal of personal reflection and prayer, I have made the decision to move to a teaching and coaching position within the Alvord ISD. I truly love this district and want to continue to contribute to our schools, our students, and the community I call home,” he said in the post.

Brown said he thinks Thurman, who served as the principal at Alvord Middle School for three years prior to becoming AHS principal a year ago, will do well in his new role.

“Mr. Thurman has undoubtedly had a positive impact on the lives of many students in his time here as the middle school and high school principal. I am certain he will continue to do so in his new role,” Brown said in the Facebook post.

He also expressed confidence in Tefertiller and his new role at the school, saying, “I can’t wait to see what our students and staff accomplish under his leadership.”

Tefertiller is in his second stint at Alvord and is in his second year since his return.

The school board is expected to approve the contract changes at Thursday’s meeting.
