Over the past two decades, thousands of students have started their education on the campus of Prairie View Elementary.

Friday morning, Northwest ISD took a break to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Rhome campus with past and current district administrators, before honoring the accomplishments of its current students in a ceremony.

Prairie View Elementary Principal Yolanda Wallace said the school continues to add to its legacy.

“We’re building on that every year and making Prairie View Elementary a great place to be,” Wallace said.

Wallace is in her sixth year at the campus that is one of two Northwest elementary schools in Wise County. She said the community feel of the campus sets it apart from the other schools in the district.

“No matter how big the district gets, this is very much a community school,” Wallace said. “We have families here where grandparents and parents went to school here in Rhome. It definitely feels like a family.”

Helping to add to the school’s legacy is the focus on instilling leadership qualities in the young students through the Leader in Me program.

“Our focus on leadership has been tremendous. We have proved they can be leaders from 4 years old,” Wallace said. “We’ll see that impact in Rhome in the future.”
