After spending four months as the acting principal at McCarroll Middle School, Brett Phipps is officially taking on the role.

Decatur ISD trustees named Phipps the principal for the seventh- and eighth-grade campus Monday, effective Jan. 1.

Phipps, who is in his first year with the district, has served as the acting principal on the campus since the start of the school year while longtime principal Dewayne Tamplen has been on family medical leave. Tamplen will retire Dec. 2.

“[Phipps] has done an incredible job, hitting the ground running to get the year started. He basically filled multiple roles,” said Decatur ISD Superintendent Judi Whitis. “I can’t say enough about the experience he brings and the leadership. We’re looking forward to what’s to come truly naming him the principal and getting his staff in place.”

Decatur ISD School Board President Cheri Boyd reported shortly before adjournment Monday that Deputy Superintendent Cindy Tatum withdrew her Level III grievance regarding the redistribution of supervisory responsibilities among central office administrators.

Tatum could not comment on the grievance.

Whitis declined to comment other than saying, “we are working through the process.”
