When Judith Pellegrini arrived at the Boyd ISD administration office Dec. 22, she caught school officials by surprise.

“She came into the office and said she wanted to pay off the lunch tab,” said Boyd ISD Superintendent Ted West. “After getting her to the food service department, she was asked whose tab she was wanting to pay for. She said, ‘All of them.'”

Pellegrini paid more than $1,400 to the district to cover the outstanding lunch balances for every Boyd student.

The grandmother of Boyd sophomores Laney and Torie Pellegrini and 2017 graduate Spencer Pellegrini said it was her opportunity to “pay it forward.”

“I was thinking of all the kids, and I wanted them to start the new year with a clean slate,” Pellegrini said. “It was something nice I could do to help a little.”

The district posted about Pellegrini’s gesture on its Facebook page on the final day before the winter break. Several members of the community thanked her for the kind gesture and called her an inspiration. West agreed.

“It was a very nice gesture for a lot of people,” West said.

Pellegrini made the donation a few months after losing her husband, Ron. He died in August after battling a brain tumor. She said the two of them attended nearly all the games of their grandchildren at Boyd.

At Christmas, she wanted to help the students at Boyd in some way. Her hope is others will also reach out to help.

“Maybe it’ll catch on,” Pellegrini said.
