The Wise County Messenger received two first-place awards at the 2018 Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

Racey Burden and Brian Knox took home first place for feature writing. “Well written, expressive,” judges said of Burden’s piece on Ivonne Fernandez, an undocumented immigrant who became an American citizen.

Knox’s feature told the story of Cindy McCasland, a Slidell woman who was at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas during the Route 91 Harvest Festival mass shooting.

Richard Greene, Joe Duty and Mack Thweatt earned a first-place award for excellence in sports coverage.

“Love the photography on the basketball honors sections” the judges said. “Well laid out with superior design… Great baseball picture with a story that had good writing with quotes and detail,” the judges said.

The Messenger earned three second-place awards: Joe Duty for sports photography, Racey Burden and Kristen Tribe for editorial, and Joe Duty for feature photography. The staff received a third-place award for Blue Moon section, and Joy Carrico earned third place for page design.

Brian Knox and Kristen Tribe placed fourth in news writing.
