A Rhome man was arrested Sunday afternoon after robbing the Oliver Creek Store at 4880 Farm Road 2264 in New Fairview.

Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said a man dressed in black and carrying a camouflage backpack walked into the store around 3 p.m. and demanded the money in the cash register. After making his demand, the man reached into his backpack as if he had a weapon. The clerk turned over the cash, and the man fled.

Akin said a passing motorist saw what was happening and reported a suspicious male fleeing on foot. Deputies located the male, Vincent Benavidez, 31, who had the cash – $345 – but no weapon.

Benavidez was arrested and charged with robbery. He remained in the Wise County Jail Tuesday on a $30,000 bond.

Sheriff Akin expressed his appreciation for the actions of the passing witness.

“We can accomplish so much more with help from the good folks of Wise County,” he said.
