Sherry Lemon won her eighth term as county clerk Tuesday in her first contested race since she was elected for the first time in 1990.

Lemon received 3,203 votes to challenger Julie Schooling’s 2,753. With no Democratic opponent, Lemon starts her next term in January 2019.

“I feel very honored to be re-elected as county clerk,” Lemon said after the results were in. “I want to thank my family and my office family who make me look good every day.”

Lemon said as the results were coming in she felt nervous. At one point in the night Schooling was within 200 votes of Lemon.

“I can’t believe I got that many votes,” Schooling said. “I’m OK with [the results]. Sherry is a good lady.”

Lemon said her plan for her next term is to “work hard.”

“I want to make sure the voters know I really appreciate them going out and supporting me,” Lemon said. “I want to make sure they know I’m really proud to be county clerk.

“I love Wise County. It’s my home.”
