In just a few weeks, the summer vacation will end and students will be running back to class.

The Decatur Church of Christ will be helping students get ready from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at its annual back-to-school event. The event is open to any students between kindergarten and the sixth grade. Parents are asked to attend with their child.

It’s the 10th year for the church located at 805 Preskitt Road to hold the event. They usually hand out 550 to 600 backpacks, according to Marcy Edwards.

“I’m the volunteer coordinator for the event and we usually end up with 250 volunteers that want to come out and help,” Edwards said. “We love to see the kids’ faces and want to help them get the school year off on the right foot. We have a lot of the same people each year. It’s fun to see them again and fun to hear their stories.”

The backpacks include basic supplies for elementary-to-intermediate-aged students.

The church purchases the backpacks and supplies, receiving some assistance from the Salvation Army.

Along with school supplies, students can get a haircut and pick up gently-used clothing. Families will also receive a barbecue meal.
