Influenza continued to torment Wise County over the weekend.

Wise Health System treated another 29 patients with the virus in the emergency room between Friday and Tuesday morning. Since the start of the new year, there’s been 139 cases in the ER.

The numbers do no reflect patients diagnosed at independent doctor offices or urgent care facilities in the county.

The hospital is taking added precautions to slow the spread of the virus. WHS spokesperson Shannon Spann said the hospital has made masks available to patients and guests.

“Per our infection control policy, any employee that had not received the flu vaccine prior to Dec. 28 must wear a mask when an encounter with a patient is possible, and one must be worn in all areas of patient contact,” Spann said.

The hospital has seen 1,324 patients in the ER since Jan. 1 with 229 admitted.
