Mothers Day

She brought you into this world, and she can take you out. So celebrate her!

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13.

Lots of local boutiques, salons, bakeries and sweet shops will have goodies ready for mom. You might also consider cleaning the house, doing the laundry or some other unspeakable chore. It will warm your mother’s heart.

One bit of advice: don’t get her a pet or plant except under special circumstances. Your mom doesn’t need another living creature to take care of.

Scottish Festival

The Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games will be at the Wise County Fairgrounds in Decatur May 11-13.

Highlights include Celtic rock music, Scottish heavy athletics and Highland dancing, not to mention traditional food, clan tents and a children’s area.

This is the first time the festival has been held outside the Metroplex, so let’s give them a big, Wise County welcome.

Butterfield Stage Days

Butterfield Stage Days, the largest annual festival in Bridgeport, is May 10-12. The event celebrates the toll bridge over the Trinity River built for the Butterfield Stage in 1860.

A post office was later established near the bridge and, boom, Bridgeport was born. That historic start is celebrated today with a carnival, pancake eating contest, rib cookoff, 5K run/walk and of course, free stagecoach rides. There is also a western parade and PRCA rodeo, which is regularly named one of the best small rodeos in the country. The parade is at 5:30 p.m. May 11 in downtown Bridgeport.

Track Meet

Weeks of hard work and determination will be tested May 11-12 at the UIL track and field championships in Austin.

Wise County is sending seven athletes to compete in the elite event at the University of Texas, and several of them have a shot at the medal stand.

Cowboy Boots

While you’ve got your boots out, take a twirl at Thursday’s Butterfield Ball at Boot Scoot and Boogie for the Arts. The old-school street dance is 6 to 9 p.m. at 12th and Halsell Streets in Bridgeport.

Proceeds benefit the Greater Wise Arts Alliance, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting the arts in Wise County. There will be a jitterbug contest and silent auction, plus a cash bar and food by The Mask House.

Tables of eight are $300, and advanced ticket sales are $45 per person. To buy tickets, call the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce, 940-683-2076.
