Feeding Wise Kids started giving backpacks filled with food to low income students in Bridgeport last year. Now, the program is in five school districts and looking to expand.

Pleasant View Baptist Church started Feeding Wise Kids after a congregation member and local teacher told the church that some of her students often went without food outside of school. For $5 each, the non-profit program purchases backpacks from the Tarrant Area Food Bank and distributes them to students in need. It’s expanded from Bridgeport to Boyd, Paradise, Chico and Northwest schools in Wise County, handing out food to 238 students.

“We’re bigger than we ever thought we’d be,” said Feeding Wise Kids President Ron Barnes. “We’ve been blessed.”

Barnes said now they’d like to serve kids in Slidell and Decatur. He estimated that around 20 students could use the backpacks in Slidell, and Decatur Cares needs help feeding between 75 and 90 students within Decatur ISD.

Barnes is open to speaking in other churches to explain the need for feeding programs in Wise County.

“Most people in this area have no idea there are homeless children here,” Barnes said. “We don’t know because we don’t see. We feel like God’s people will meet the need if they know about the need.”
