WELCOME TO BOYD – Artist Audra Lambert shows off the mural she painted on the side of Boyd City Hall, welcoming visitors to downtown. Messenger photo by Joe Duty

Driving past Boyd City Hall on Rock Island Avenue, the eye-catching mural on the building’s side is on full display.

“Greetings from Boyd Texas,” the postcard-like sign proclaims, inviting visitors to the town’s main thoroughfare. Underneath the lettering of the mural is a scene of Boyd’s downtown drawn from old photographs.

“In 1900 if you were standing here, this is what you’d see,” artist Audra Lambert said. “It’s like looking back in time.”

The final design for the mural, chosen by Boyd residents in an online vote, was painted by Lambert in less than a week. Nearly 400 residents voted in the online poll.

As Lambert worked, she kept hearing cars honking from the street. At first she thought they were trying to get her attention, but then Lambert realized drivers were stopping to look at the mural and missing their green light.

Catching the attention of passersby is very much the idea behind the mural.

“I’m hoping a lot of people will come here to have their pictures taken,” Lambert said. “I think it turned out really nice. I was having so much fun it flew by.”

Lambert grew up in Boyd and is returning home after attending college in Wichita Falls. She hopes to complete more projects for her hometown and wants to start a summer art camp for local students next year.

“I can’t wait to do more projects for Boyd,” she said. “With public art, the real special thing about it is it’s very accessible. You don’t have to go looking for it.”
