Devon Energy surprised Decatur’s Carson Elementary in January with a $10,000 Science Giants grant award.

Science Giants is an awards program established by Devon that recognizes schools for helping students excel in science and preparing them for college and future careers.

Carson Elementary will use the grant to purchase 30 Google Expedition kits, which are educational virtual reality (VR) glasses, that will allow students to take “virtual field trips” around the world.

“Carson Elementary School’s teachers demonstrated a strong commitment to enhancing science education for their students,” said Ryan Madden, production supervisor for Devon Energy. “The school is very deserving of the award and we’re excited for the experiences in science the VR glasses will bring the students.

“Science plays a critical role in not only our business, but also the world,” he said. “Carson Elementary is providing students with a foundation to pursue careers in our industry. We are excited to have the opportunity to help strengthen their classroom learning through our Science Giants Awards Program.”

In addition to the $10,000 awarded to Carson Elementary, Devon Energy also awarded Northwest Independent School District a $15,000 grant. The school district will use the grant to add an exhibit to its outdoor learning center, which is utilized by the entire district.

Science Giants was created by Devon Energy in 2010 to foster an interest in science among students across the country. As of 2018, Devon has donated $875,000 to schools in America to develop science education programs.
