Cooper joins trooper ranks

Cooper, a 2011 Denton High School graduate and 2015 graduate of the University of North Texas, graduated Dec. 22 as a member of the 162nd Texas Department of Public Safety trooper training class. She is now stationed in Bonham, beginning six months of on-the-job training.

Cooper, 24, is the daughter of Scott and Sharon Cooper of Denton and granddaughter of Deanie Cooper and Laverne Green of Decatur.

Cooper’s father is a Decatur High School graduate and was stationed in Wise County as a trooper from 1995 to 1999. Before that he worked as a deputy at the Wise County Sheriff’s Office. He was promoted to sergeant investigator in the DPS Criminal Investigation Division in 2000. He rose to lieutenant in the division before retiring in 2011.

Cooper was one of 97 men and women in the December class.

The troopers began the 24-week training academy in July. Instruction covered more than 100 subjects, including counterterrorism, traffic and criminal law, arrest and control procedures, accident reconstruction, first aid and Spanish. They also received training in use of force, communication skills, firearms, driving, criminal interdiction, cultural diversity and physical fitness.
