A 2-year-old child died Sunday at a Fort Worth hospital after being found unresponsive in his family’s pool Thursday afternoon near Balsora.

Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said deputies and medics responded to a home off Farm Road 2210 around 5 p.m. when a 2 1/2-year-old boy was found in the family’s in-ground swimming pool.

“The child was taken to Wise Health System where he was revived, and then (flown) to Cook Children’s Hospital [in Fort Worth],” Akin said.

The boy had been on life support at Cook Children’s Medical Center, Akin said, before he died at 7:05 a.m. Sunday in pediatric ICU, according to information on the Tarrant County Medical Examiners website. The medical examiners office identified the child as Oliver Smith.

Akin said the child’s father had been home with his son Thursday afternoon, and the child was taking a nap. Akin said the father also fell asleep, and he was awakened when his wife arrived at the home. They began searching for the child before finding him in the pool, which did not have a fence around it, Akin said.

Sheriff’s Office investigators and Child Protective Services are looking at the incident, the sheriff said.

Funeral for the child is pending at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
