The Chico Dragons will have a new football coach and athletic director next fall.

The school district posted the job opening Friday.

Chico ISD Superintendent Don Elsom did not return a phone call about the job opening Friday.

Current Athletic Director Lane Wilson coached the Dragons the past three seasons, going 12-20. The Dragons went 4-7 last year, making the playoffs for a second straight season but falling in bi-district.

Chico had not made the playoffs since 2001 prior to the past two years.

Wilson said he was being reassigned, but hadn’t been given an assignment by the district.

“I’m proud of what we accomplished [in the three years],” Wilson said. “We had a real good first year and didn’t make the playoffs. The last two years, we were able to make the playoffs. Overall, the athletic program went well. The girls made the region tournament in volleyball. The boys basketball team was back in the playoffs last year and will likely make it again this year. There’s nothing for me to hang my head about.

“I wish I understood the mode of thinking. I hope for the kids’ sake they get someone good.”

Wilson has been at Chico for a total of 7 years. He pointed out in his time at the school, the football team won 34 games after winning just eight in the previous seven years.
